چکیده

In low-collisionality plasmas, anisotropic heat conduction due to a magnetic field leads to buoyancy instabilities for any nonzero temperature gradient. We study analogous instabilities in degenerate collisional plasmas, i.e., when the electron collision frequency is large compared to the electron cyclotron frequency. Although heat conduction is nearly isotropic in this limit, the small residual anisotropy ensures that collisional degenerate plasmas are also convectively unstable independent of the sign of the temperature gradient. We show that the range of wavelengths that are unstable is independent of the magnetic field strength, while the growth time increases with decreasing magnetic field strength. We discuss the application of these collisional buoyancy instabilities to white dwarfs and neutron stars. Magnetic tension and the low specific heat of a degenerate plasma significantly limit their effectiveness; the most promising venues for growth are in the liquid oceans of young, weakly magnetized neutron stars (B . 10 G) and in the cores of young, high magnetic field white dwarfs (B ∼ 10 G).

Electromagnetic streaming instabilities of magnetized accretion disks with strong collisional coupling of species

Abstract. Electromagnetic streaming instabilities of multicomponent collisional magnetized accretion disks are studied. Sufficiently ionized regions of the disk are explored where there is strong collisional coupling of neutral atoms with both ions and dust grains simultaneously. The steady state is investigated in detail and the azimuthal and radial background velocities of species are calcula...

Perpendicular electron collisions in drift and acoustic wave instabilities

Perpendicular electron dynamics and the associated collisions are discussed in relation to the collisional drift wave instability. In addition, the limit of small parallel wave numbers of this instability is studied and it is shown to yield a reduced wave frequency. It is also shown that in this case the growth rate in fact decreases for smaller parallel wave numbers, instead of growing proport...

Magnetic reconnection in weakly collisional highly magnetized electron-ion plasmas

A reduced three-field model of two-dimensional magnetic reconnection in a weakly collisional, highly magnetized plasma consisting of isothermal electrons and cold ions is derived from a set of Braginskii-like fluid equations. The model is then used to calculate the linear growth rate of the reconnecting instability in collisionless and semicollisional parameter regimes. © 2010 American Institut...

Dynamic and Debye shielding and antishielding in magnetized, collisionless plasmas.

While shielding in collisional, strongly magnetized (one-dimensional) plasmas obeys the standard Debye result, shielding in collisionless, immobile ion plasmas is far more complex than commonly believed. In some circumstances, the plasma will antishield a positive test charge; i.e., the plasma becomes more positive in the neighborhood of a positive test charge. When shielding does occur, it res...

Turbulent transport and heating of trace heavy ions in hot magnetized plasmas.

Scaling laws for the transport and heating of trace heavy ions in low-frequency magnetized plasma turbulence are derived and compared with direct numerical simulations. The predicted dependences of turbulent fluxes and heating on ion charge and mass number are found to agree with numerical results for both stationary and differentially rotating plasmas. Heavy ion momentum transport is found to ...
